Sexual Health Of Over-50s ‘Important’ To Maintain Wellbeing In Old Age

21 Feb

Healthcare professionals should ensure that the sexual health of people over the age of 50 isn’t overlooked if wellbeing in old age is to be maintained, according to a new study from the University of Sheffield, Manchester Metropolitan and the University of Manchester.

The research found that for both men and women aged between 50 and 90 there was a positive link between the frequency of kissing and petting, and overall levels of wellbeing. What’s more, women over the age of 80 were found to be more likely to share the sexual likes of their partner, not feel obligated to have sex and feel emotionally close to them than compared to those aged between 50 and 79.

Men in the same age group, meanwhile, also reported that they were more likely to share the sexual interests of their partner and feel emotionally close to them than compared to their counterparts aged between 50 and 79.

The University of Sheffield’s Dr Sharron Hinchcliff said: “There is a growing body of evidence showing that sexual activity is important to the quality of life of older adults, and that it can be influenced by physical, psychological and social factors. However, older adults’ experiences of sexual difficulties remain relatively unexplored.”

If you are having trouble in the bedroom, make an appointment to see your GP and get yourself a clean bill of health. Another option would be to look into the best treatment for erectile dysfunction. There are all sorts of different products and therapies you can try, such as acupuncture, herbal Viagra and more… it’s just about finding out what works best for you.
